Good Eats: Cubing a Round

Yet another shining moment for Deb Duchon! Her new roles really bring out her spirit and adds another new dimension to the show. Good Eats never gets old because Alton Brown and his staff are always coming up with something new to keep us entertained.

Mmmmmmm...chicken fried steak! I was difficult watching that show just before crawling off to bed. I had a serious hankering for some chicken fried steak that still hasn't been satisfied three days later. I guess after enjoying this wonderful dish down in South Carolina a few times I'm worried that I will be sadly disappointed by a Michigan version. I'll have to scout out some of my favorite 'local' joints and see who makes it.

Working a Round: Yes, I've been pretty busy lately. Of course having a job with an hour long drive eats into my time, but I've also been doing some projects around the house. It was difficult to stay up to catch my favorite this week being that I get up at 4:30 now! Maybe I'll hav eto look into Tiivo or a DVR. I even missed my other favs, This Old House and Ask TOH! Right now the coffee is brewing and I'm about to head downstairs to catch up on those two!

As always, thanks for stopping by and feel free to leave comments about my ramblings or the show!

Alton Brown in Space

Well, not in space, but talking to an astronaut! In Alton's 'Edible News' section he talks about his recent experience chating with astronaut Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria who is on board the space station.

"My moment in the Tang

Like so many children of the 60s I grew up wanting to be an astronaut and this week I may have come as close as I’ll ever get.

At 1730 UTC Monday the 12th, I entered a small studio in Atlanta and had a video chat (via NASA Mission Control in Houston) with International Space Station Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria who was about 175 nautical miles over my head at the time."

Head over to Alton's site and read the rest here!

Good Eats: Corned Beef and other treats

The corned beef episode was pretty good. It was lower key and with less frill than most, but the cooking stole the show this time. Well, I can't really say 'less' frill, maybe better executed frill would be more appropriate. The pub scene with Deb Duchon as the barkeep now ranks as one of my favorite Good Eats scene ever! She's always been my favorite 'character' and that just topped it off. The Lady of the Fridge scene was funny too; she's become a regular fixture (like a real fridge) around Alton's kitchen lately.

Of course, today is St. Patrick's Day and it is said that if you wait all night by some sincere slabs of beef brisket the Great Corned Beef will visit. For the rest of us, we'll either have to buy some already prepared or check out Alton Brown's latest creation. I have to admit I have not personally tried most of Alton's recipes yet but this one looks like a winner and easy to make; even if it does take a good amount of time. Has anybody started this project yet? Any Briners out there?

Yesterday I found two treats to satisfy my pomegranate cravings. I was unable to locate any fresh examples in the local fruit market so I had to substitute. First I bought a bottle of juice to tie me over for a while, then I had a great concoction at my favorite mexican joint last night that had midore, Malibu rum, and grenadine (yum!).

Alton's Dino Sprayer

Oh lookeee! Mr. Gnome has a new friend! He may not be as cool to hang out with as Alton's Dino sprayer, but he's a close second. And he does have an advantage: I picked him up at the local dollar store for a buck! Not only does he squirt liquids, but has a sport bottle-like nozzle on the back apparently for drinking; sorta weird if you ask me.

Bowl O' Busy

I know, I know, I haven't been keeping as up to date as I usually try to do around here! Getting reacclimated to a daily schedule with my new job, plus now I'm also serving on a jury, has been taking a toll on my free time. I am enjoying it though. i love my new job, much more than I had imagined, and I am also enjoying having a Monday through Friday schedule for the first time in my life. I now know what a "weekend" is!

Before I forget, since I may not get around to it, I have to say that I enjoyed the fresh take on Good Eats in the last episode. I know some people thought Alton looked nuts, but I think that was somewhat planned and it made me feel like laughing. Less props and more Alton was the name of the game(hen) in this last episode. I also like how he split the focus between cooking and the all important topic of sanitation. I'm sure there are a lot of home cooks who don't take this matter as seriously as they should. And why not have fun with it? I'm eager to see what the next episode will bring to the table!

Speaking of Alton Brown; I just acquired a new Alton-inspired gadget that everyone will love. I can't tell you about it now since I need to take a picture and do a test run with it first!

PS If you have been watching the Tara Lynn Grant story unfold lately I can tell you that it has been a shock in my home town! Our local paper typically mentions minor fender benders, deer vs. car accidents, and very petty crime. This past weekend I had helicopters hovering over my backyard and police patrols searching for body parts a quarter of a mile away on the trails I often hike. It is strange to look out my upstairs window and know the parts of a murdered woman were scattered about within view of my house! Very disturbing!
