Good Eats Dutch baby
OK, so I've become addicted to the Dutch baby! In fact, I have one in the oven as I'm writing this. I blame Alton Brown and his hilarious, yet tasty, antics for my addiction. Here are a couple of shots I took of the process.

New Good Eats Episode: Celeryman
The Celeryman is coming to the Good Eats kitchen Monday night! I can only imagine a celery stalk resembling the Fighting Okra. Mmmm...doesn't a celery soda sounds refreshing right about now?
Food Network's description:
Celery is not just for peanut butter anymore as host Alton Brown explores the only common plant that can be used as a vegetable, a starch, an herb and a spice.

Alton Brown's Dutch Baby Saves the Day
Finally! I escaped from fatherhood, at least for a few minutes, to attempt some Good Eats recipes from last weeks show (the last two shows were brilliant by the way).
First I tried Alton's fried chicken recipe from Good Eats: Fry Hard II. Sadly, all I have to show for it is a house smelling of crusty fried chicken and a few grease burns on my arm. Apparently the thermometer I bought was telling me that my oil temperature was way lower than it really was. I let the oil cool a bit before the second batch of drumsticks went in, but by that time I no longer desired a piece of fresh fried chicken. I'll have to regroup and find a new thermometer.
Secondly; I tried my hand at popovers. I haven't made them in years and I just happen to have the twelve cup version of the pan Alton picked up at what I think of as Miss Wong's Emporium of Cooking Gear. Well, I screwed it up. Either my oven runs a bit hot or I just need to check them earlier than the recommended cooking time like most baked goods. The insides were good, but a bit too crispy on the outside. My wife turned them into a wonderful hot fudge sundae base though :-)
For my next trick, I took a shot at the Dutch baby. How could I not after the wonderful skit and the giant clogs! Success at last! It was perfect and will likely be prepared again for breakfast again tomorrow; this time with some fresh local strawberries. If I had failed at this basic cooking task it would have been cold cereal and carry-out food for a while. Instead I was rewarded with a new tool in my culinary binder o' recipes.

New Good Eats Episode; Popovers
New Good Eats episode coming up Monday night on popovers. There was also an episode on dutch over cooking, which I've really been waiting for, last week. Luckily, I finally have a DVR and recorded it. Alton did a great job with this show; not too much fluff and a lot of good cooking. I may have to upgrade my dutch oven to the flat-top type for some fo the coal cooking soon. For those of you who are still suffering as I used to when missing a show; the Dutch over episode will air again later Monday night.
Besides having the DVR at my disposal; I also have a laptop on the way. Soon I'll be able to hold the baby, watch Good Eats, and play on the internet all at the same time! That should help out the blogging a bit :-) I'm eager to start my Feasting on Asphalt review project soon!

Alton Brown Hits the Road: Feasting on Asphalt 2 Marathon
Food Network is airing a Feasting on Asphalt 2: The River Run marathon this Saturday starting at 7PM EST. Here's where the advantage of having a newborn kicks in: I'll be stuck in front of the TV until the wee hours of the night and have a valid excuse for watching all six hours :-) Actually, I'll use it as an excuse to start in on the DVD version. I'm excited to see what extra material is in there. The first season had a few good stops that didn't make it to the final version.
